Performance Assessment and Management in Service-Oriented Architectures for Automated Driving Systems

IEEE Open Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems, vol. 7, pp. 2208–2234

Abstract

Service-oriented architectures have become a fundamental paradigm for designing and building complex automotive systems. These architectures rely on the interaction of independent services that communicate through well-defined interfaces, offering significant flexibility and scalability. Ensuring that the system complies with its desired performance levels during operation is nonetheless crucial. This comprises both the mitigation of effects originating from hardware and software faults (as in ISO 26262) and performance insufficiencies (as in ISO 21448) that arise, e.g., from unforeseen environmental effects. To do so, one of the key challenges is the consistent collection and analysis of quality data across different services through the system’s self-perception capabilities. In this work, we model quality data as quality vectors, describing, e.g., the availability, reliability, and functional performance of each service. We further elaborate on key patterns of a service-oriented reference architecture that exhibits performance management and self-assessment capabilities. By doing so, we aim to pave the way for automated driving systems that can find a suitable runtime configuration of services, monitor their performance online, and enable self-adaptation on the fly. In the event of degradations or failures, the system can identify a feasible reconfiguration and/or adaptation of its behavior to respond appropriately to the current situation.
