DevOps for Automatic Train Operation with the DEFACTO Pipeline

IEEE International Automated Vehicle Validation Conference (IAVVC), pp. 1–6

Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive description of the conceptualization, implementation, and evaluation of a DevOps pipeline tailored for automated driving functions pertinent to railway operations. The pipeline, named DEFACTO (DevOps Pipeline for Automatic Train Operation), is underpinned by the fundamental objective of facilitating a seamless continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) workflow for the development, testing, and validation of intricate railway software. Notably, DEFACTO is applied to a 1:5-scale locomotive equipped with a real-world sensor set-up and uses open simulation system. By leveraging open-source solutions such as Git, Robot Operating System (ROS), Gazebo, and Docker containers, DEFACTO ensures that developers can effortlessly transition from local code commits to on-vehicle tests, encompassing both laboratory settings and field demonstrations. This paper delves into the potential benefits of DevOps practices for autonomous driving functions within railway vehicles, emphasizing their significance in enhancing safety, accuracy, and minimising development timelines.
