Thermal-EXAMINER: IP Extraction from MAGIC Logic-in-Memory Using Thermal Side-Channel Attacks
IEEE Nordic Circuits and Systems Conference (NorCAS), pp. 1–7
Abstract
Memristors have become an important post-CMOS technology that enables new computing paradigms such as logic-in-memory (LIM) with MAGIC. It employs binary switching states to implement basic logic functions. These new processing paradigms come with new hardware security challenges. In this paper, we investigate how the netlist of confidential IP, implemented using LIM, can be reverse engineered using a thermal side-channel. We propose a recovery algorithm, which iteratively recommends thermal side-channel attacks to run until the full netlist is recovered. We show how this attack can recover most of the ISCAS85 benchmarks in less than 900 iterations.
