An Extended Approach for Infrastructure-less Grid-based Smartphone Positioning

Abstract

Since today's smartphones include numerous communication technologies such as BLE and WLAN in addition to complementary sensors, they are ideally suited for indoor localization of pedestrians and thus intensively researched in recent years. However, BLE- and WLAN-based localization requires installation, configuration and maintenance of the infrastructure. Therefore, this paper focuses on infrastructure-free positioning using only the embedded smartphone sensors, fingerprinting calibration, and digital building models. Even without an initial position guess, the current location could thus be determined within a few steps. The grid-based particle filter enabled the sensor fusion between the pedestrian dead reckoning, magnetic field orientations, and the digital building model. The uncertainty modeling of the individual sensor readings is considered via parameter weighting to optimize the position accuracy. Thus, the uncertainty of the combined sensors was narrowed by about 25% compared to the reference if no prior location information is utilized.
