Loosely Coupled Observation Processing and Data Exchange System for Complex Teams of On-Site Construction Robots
Springer eBooks, pp. 34–46
Abstract
Abstract The construction sector has slow adaptation to emerging technologies and lagging productivity compared to other industries. Level of construction robot autonomy is impacted by complexity and variability of a conventional construction site environment. One approach to increasing robot autonomy is to integrate more environmental sensors. However, when faced with the reality of complex tooling and sensing systems used on a construction site, including rented equipment that frequently moves between sites, integration of multiple changing sensor data streams becomes a bottleneck for smooth operation. Machines that host sensory systems often become data silos that do not communicate across systems. To address this, we explore how to enable the sharing of sensor observations between actors on a construction site using loosely coupled communication and event processing between sensors and construction site machines. We present an exemplary system architecture and assess its performance.
