Preface to the Second Edition

De Gruyter eBooks, pp. IX–X

Abstract

When I was contacted by DeGruyter and asked for a second edition of the book, I was very grateful to get the opportunity to remove quite a few mistakes in the text, in equations and figures that crept into the first edition no matter how careful I read the manuscript. My favorite is dropping a factor of e, i. e., the elementary charge. For instance, when coding a simulation I regularly equate V and eV and then insert negative signs and factors at the end as needed to fix units, etc. While this pragmatic way works very well for me, it not necessarily leads to the optimum way of presenting the material. Therefore, I tried to remove as many ambiguities as possible.Apart from removing mistakes, the second edition of the book comes with multiple updates in the various chapters and additional material.Furthermore, I have added a novel chapter on cryogenic electronics to the current edition.
