Achieving Robust Frequency Control in Microgrids through Automated LQR Control
IEEE Workshop on the Electronic Grid (eGRID), pp. 1–6
Abstract
This paper presents an enhanced method for Load Frequency Control (LFC) in autonomous microgrid systems utilizing a Linear Quadratic Regulator (pLQR) controller. Initially, a comprehensive state space model of the microgrid system, which combines a photovoltaic generator, wind turbine generator, microturbine generator, diesel generator, fuel cell, flywheel, and battery was developed. Then, a technique was devised for selecting and updating the state and control variable weighting matrices (Q and R) of the LQR controller, leveraging random initialization and eigenvalue positioning. The optimal values of Q and R were determined by computing the solution to the algebraic Riccati equation over a preset number of iterations. Next, based on the chosen weights, an optimal control strategy was designed for a two-area autonomous microgrid system to ensure the stability of the frequency of each subsystem within a permissible range. Simulation results validate the efficacy of the proposed pLQR, using automated weighting matrices over the manual mLQR methodology.
