Dynamic Phasor Based Dynamic State Estimation for Converter-Driven Grids

IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems (AMPS), vol. 31, pp. 01–06

Abstract

Increase in integration of intermittent generations and complex loads to the grid has lead to continual and faster changes in grid operating point, thereby necessitating dynamic monitoring of power system states for safe operation. This paper presents a dynamic-phasor domain formulation of centralized dynamic state estimation (DP-DSE), where the estimated states are the branch currents and non-generator bus voltages in rectangular form. The formulation of the estimator in dynamic-phasor domain ensures suitability of the estimator for monitoring converter driven grids characterized with wide variation in timescale of system dynamics. Detailed derivation of the states-transition model using the modified nodal analysis is presented. A measurement pre-processing step is applied to transform the measurements into required form in dynamic-phasor domain. The proposed estimator is successfully tested on modified WSCC-9 bus system for different dynamic operating conditions.
