Hybrid and Electrified Powertrains
Abstract
The combination of an electric motor and a combustion engine to a hybrid powertrain, initially used in the Lohner-Porsche Mixte in 1902, was identified as a promising concept. Although other variants of hybrid drives are possible and have already been realized, this chapter focuses on hybrid electric vehicles. This type of vehicle combines an internal combustion engine with an electric powertrain, often connected by a hybrid transmission. Depending on the degree of hybridization, FEV Consulting predicts for 2030 a market share of electrified hybrid powertrains up to 71.0% for Europe and 82.6% for the USA, respectively. Hybrid systems offer both noticeable and hidden functionalities for the driver. Electric driving and sailing are two of the tangible features that significantly differentiate the driving experience from conventional drives. In recent years, batteries have established themselves as the main storage medium for electrical energy in hybrid vehicles.
