  • 1× Erik Jan Zürcher (Leiden, 1953) was awarded his Ph.D. at Leiden University in 1984. He has taught at Nijmegen and Amsterdam Universities and been attached to the International Institute of Social History twice (1990-99 as senior research fellow and 2008-12 as general director). From 1997 to 2018 he was full professor of Turkish Studies at Leiden University. 2018-20 he was director of the Leiden Institute of Area Studies. He has been a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2008 and affiliate professor in Stockholm University from 2013 to 2016. Zürcher has written or edited twenty books, mostly on Turkey in the 20th century. His primary focus is on the transition from empire to nation state.
