Supporting Requirements Assessment Through Enterprise Architecture Models

Abstract

Enterprise modelling supports the analysis of organisational change by representing business objectives, processes and information systems. Using Enterprise Architecture (EA) models to assess software modernisation and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) regulatory requirements set out in applicable legislation requires determining what evidence the EA models provide and which conclusions that evidence supports. This paper presents an assessment process that identifies the required information, defines assumptions for translating requirements into graph queries and interprets the results in the context of each model. We examine the information required to assess 106 rules and execute eleven selected Cypher queries on 961 publicly sourced ArchiMate models. The results show that structural queries can be reused across models, but often identify patterns broader than the original requirements. Queries using element properties can define the assessment scope more precisely, but their applicability depends on metadata that is limited and inconsistent across repositories. These findings show that assessments should distinguish possible EA problems from missing model evidence and state when there is not enough information to assess a requirement. The proposed process clarifies which aspects of a requirement graph queries can assess and when additional evidence or human judgement is needed. It contributes to enterprise modelling by showing how requirements can guide EA model analysis and help identify the information models need to represent for assessment.
