Nanorod-array on a racetrack MIM plasmonic sensor with quintuple Fano resonances for enhanced RI sensitivity
Abstract
Abstract A plasmonic biosensor platform based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) bus waveguide centre-coupled to a racetrack resonator decorated with silver nanorod arrays is proposed and studied. The optical response of this MIM biosensor architecture is investigated by means of two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. It is shown that the incorporation of nanorod arrays along the resonator sidewalls enables excitation of five Fano resonances, distributed across the visible (Vis) and near-infrared (near-IR) spectral regions. The influence of key geometrical parameters, including coupling gap, number of nanorods and their radius, as well as refractive index (RI) of the cavity medium, is systematically examined to determine their effect on the transmission characteristics and resonance behaviour. Under optimized conditions, a maximum RI sensitivity of 4420 nm/RIU is obtained. The sensor performance is further assessed for RI based detection of glucose concentrations and for temperature sensing by employing deionized (DI) water as the thermo-optic medium. A conceptual microfluidic integration scheme is outlined to illustrate the potential of the proposed configuration for on-chip chemical and biochemical sensing. The results obtained in this work indicate that nanorod-induced multi-resonant Fano behaviour in compact MIM cavities can be effectively exploited to enhance sensitivity and multichannel sensor operations.
