From zero to data hero: teaching research data management through physical phone experiments
Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)
Abstract
Skills in research data management (RDM) have become increasingly relevant for a range of professional roles, including data steward / engineer / scientist and RDM tool ambassador / community manager / liaison officer. For these roles, experience in data generation and a sense of dataset ownership are essential. The German National Research Data Infrastructure for Engineering Sciences (NFDI4ING) has recently implemented an innovative summer school concept for RDM ("Praktikum Digitalisierung", DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.14222359). In the summer school, phyphox is used as a mobile lab that enables participants to collect, export, and analyze smartphone sensor data in reproducible, low-threshold experiments, while also engaging and motivating students in ways that support learning success.
