Fermionic Condensates

Cambridge University Press eBooks, pp. 232–256

Abstract

We show that besides the bosonic order parameters of the other chapters, it is also possible for fermions to spontaneously break a symmetry, provided they pair into bosonic conglomerates. We introduce the BCS superconductor and Helium-3 as archetypical examples of this type of order, but also discuss alternative pairings. We also give an overview of the possible ways in which spatial symmetries may be broken along with phase symmetry in these fermionic condensates.
