Precast composite beams with partially embedded composite dowels for efficient bridge engineering
ce/papers, vol. 9, pp. 1090–1094
Abstract
Abstract Across Europe, engineers strive to increase sustainability and decrease socio‐economic costs of new bridges and replacement structures. Especially for medium spans between 30 m to 60 m, composite bridges meet these criteria, leading to faster constructions with improved designs. Using prefabricated elements with composite dowels can further improve the competitiveness of composite bridges when compared to prestressed concrete. Within the scope of this study, the shear capacity of partially embedded composite dowels in precast slabs is analyzed by push‐out tests according to EC 4. Two different studies featuring a total of three different concrete covers are evaluated. The results are compared to the required capacity from a sample bridge calculation. The tests show a non‐linear correlation between upper concrete cover of the composite dowel and its shear capacity. With a concrete cover of 60 mm, the required shear capacity of 135 kN was exceeded, showing a capacity of 250 kN per dowel. Reducing the concrete cover severely decreases shear capacity, though part of this effect is attributed to asymmetric failure of specimens within the test series. Based on the study's results, a preliminary dimensioning formula is proposed correlating concrete cover and shear capacity.
