Abstract
The increasing demands on companies and research institutions regarding the technological performance of new products not only lead to higher technical complexity but also create new challenges for human interaction with advanced technologies. Against this background, the development of socio-technical systems that address both technical performance and the needs of key stakeholders becomes increasingly important. This thesis addresses this tension field under the paradigm of human-technology exploration and proposes a participatory design approach for socio-technical systems with a particular emphasis on human-technology interaction. To this end, existing design approaches from literature are analyzed and guiding principles are derived. Building on this fundament, central concepts are developed and validated in two case studies. The first case study focused on the interaction design of a vehicle assistance system, while the second addressed the design of an assembly training system in cooperation with an industry partner. Although the methodology is technology-neutral, Tangible XR was employed in both case studies as a haptically enhanced virtual prototyping environment to actively involve stakeholders in the design process. The results demonstrate that the developed methodology can be effectively applied in socio-technical design processes and exhibits a high degree of usability. The thesis thus contributes to the systematic and stakeholder-oriented development of future-proof socio-technical systems.
