Automotive safety software architecture: a standardised software development framework for future automotive safety-critical applications
RWTH Publications (RWTH Aachen)
Abstract
With the rapid increase in electrical and electronic systems in modern road vehicles, there has been a significant surge in the demand for sophisticated safety-critical software systems. A fundamental prerequisite for such software is its intrinsic fault-tolerant design and built-in fault-resilient capabilities, with high compliance with safety standards. To address these challenges effectively, the key strategy is to focus on standardisation and enhance the maintainability and reliability of safety-critical software. Moreover, traditional software development practices fall short when applied to safety-critical embedded systems due to their inherent inability to directly address non-functional requirements and quality attributes such as safety and security. In this dissertation, we aim to confront these challenges by conceptualising and designing a standardised software development framework called Automotive Safety Software Architecture (ASSA), specifically geared to fulfil the stringent boundary conditions set forth by the automotive safety and quality standard.
