Mapping Technological Hegemony in Global Semiconductor Research: A Multi-dimensional Bibliometric Framework
Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)
Abstract
This study proposes a bibliometric framework to investigate technological hegemony in global semiconductor research, analyzing a dataset of 3,202,031 papers from the CWTS Web of Science database from 2000 to 2023. Utilizing the CWTS Leiden Clustering 2024, 266 micro-clusters were mapped into 10 semiconductor subfields and analyzed across five periods for five major nations: the U.S., China, Germany, South Korea, and Japan. Key metrics included the number of publications, RTA, Top 10% excellence, and collaboration rates. The results reveal a significant transition from Western-centric dominance to a multipolar competitive landscape, driven primarily by China's rapid ascent. Furthermore, diverging national collaboration strategies reflect distinct strategic responses to the intensifying global competition for technological hegemony.
