Experimental Data Set on Liquid Ammonia Flash-Boiling Atomization in SLE manufactured Fused-Silica Micro-Nozzles: Boundary Conditions, Internal Geometry (µCT), Nozzle Internal Flow and Spray Morphology
RWTH Publications (RWTH Aachen)
Abstract
The utilization of liquid ammonia as a carbon-free fuel presents a promising pathway for decarbonizing energy conversion systems. A critical factor in its successful implementation is the precise control of the injection and atomization processes, particularly under flash-boiling conditions. This dataset provides an experimental characterization of continuous steady state liquid ammonia flash-boiling atomization using fused silica glass micro-nozzles. These transparent nozzles were manufactured with Selective Laser Etching (SLE), a technique that allows for highly customized and precise internal micro-geometries. High-speed shadowgraphy was utilized to capture the steady-state spray morphology, yielding high-resolution data on spray shape, cone angle, and spatial fluctuations. Furthermore, the dataset includes detailed structural characterizations of the internal nozzle geometries resulting from the SLE process, enabling a thorough analysis of surface characteristics, inlet shapes, and manufacturing precision. The central dataset integrates these geometric insights with processed thermodynamic and fluid dynamic parameters, including injection pressure, temperature, mass flow rate, discharge coefficients (Cd), and Jakob numbers. By linking raw imaging data with evaluated spray metrics, this dataset supports the development of predictive models and injection strategies for ammonia-based combustion systems.
