Abstract
The groundbreaking publication by Allen and Berkley (Image method for efficiently simulating small-room acoustics, 1979, https://doi.org/10.1121/1.382599) with 5790 citations is probably one of the most cited articles in JASA. It contains a rigorous application of the image source model for a rectangular room and its implementation in computer software. This work was of crucial importance for all simulation techniques of room impulse responses with high temporal resolution—and thus for digital signal processing and auralization. The work is revisited and discussed further, focusing on modal theory and hybrid models.
