Galaxy observations with DESHIMA 2.0

Abstract

DESHIMA 2.0 is an integrated superconducting spectrometer operating between 200 and 400 GHz with 339 spectral channels. Its deployment on the ASTE 10-m telescope marks a step forward for wide-band (sub)millimeter instruments that use MKID filterbanks with compact optics. To fully exploit DESHIMA 2.0's capabilities, we are developing a dedicated position-switching analysis pipeline, tailored to the stability requirements of on-chip spectrometers. Position switching offers an alternative to scanning-based observing modes, with increased sensitivity for unresolved targets such as high-redshift dusty star-forming galaxies. These are a key science driver for DESHIMA 2.0, because its octave-bandwidth offers a unique window into the bright [C II] line at 3≲z≲7. We present the calibration and analysis pipeline, highlight lessons learned, and outline strategies relevant to upcoming systems using similar observing modes. We show performance metrics and early astronomical results.
