Exidia umbrinella Bres.
Abstract
Exidia umbrinella Bres., Fungi Tridentini 2 (14): 98, 1900 Figs 23 I, 24 D Lectotype (selected here, MBT 10031444). Italy • Trentino-Alto Adge: Trento, Pellizzano, Val di Sole, Abies alba, 1888 Bresadola (S F 20648, studied). Description. Basidiomata annual, button-like to cupulate-orbicular, up to 2 cm in diam., narrowly attached, up to 0.5 cm thick, gelatinous. Hymenial surface even or folded, rarely bearing scattered granular projections up to 0.1 mm long, at first ochraceous- to reddish-brown, later dark brown, in dry condition darkening to nearly black. Abhymenial surface rough, covered by tightly arranged dots, reddish-brown or dark brown. Margin free, concolourous with hymenial surface, entire, even or indistinctly lobate. Hyphal structure monomitic, hyphae clamped; context hyphae hyaline or yellowish, thin-walled or with variably thickened, gelatinized walls, interwoven or subparallel, anastomosing, 1–5 μm in diam., subhymenial hyphae hyaline or yellowish-brownish, thin-walled or with a distinct wall, predominantly ascending, 1–3 μm in diam., basidia-bearing hyphae thin-walled or with a distinct wall, 2–4 μm in diam. Hyphidia with a hyaline or brownish, often sinuous hyphoid stem, 3–5 μm in diam., and hyaline or brownish apical branches, 1–2 μm in diam., embedded in yellowish-brownish gelatinous matrix and forming a continuous layer up to 20 μm thick. Probasidia tapering or clavate, 9–13.5 × 4.5–5.5 μm. Basidia four-celled, narrowly ellipsoid-ovoid, (9.5 –) 10–13.5 (– 14) × (6.2 –) 6.7–9.8 (– 10.8) μm (n = 42 / 2), sterigmata up to 30 × 1–2 μm. Basidiospores narrowly cylindrical to allantoid, distinctly curved, (8.7 –) 9.0–13.2 (– 13.8) × (2.7 –) 2.8–3.8 (– 4.0) μm (n = 52 / 2), L = 11.29–12.00, W = 3.10–3.33, Q = 3.41–3.90. Remarks. Exidia umbrinella is a member of the E. recisa complex (Fig. 9). It is the only species in this group known so far to occur on coniferous hosts. The substrate, as well as rather short basidiospores, provide sufficient grounds to separate E. umbrinella from the otherwise very similar E. recisa. This species was described by Bresadola (1900) based on a rather large set of specimens from Italy and Slovakia. Abies spp. and Larix decidua were mentioned as its substrates. Here we select the best-preserved, fertile specimen of E. umbrinella from Stockholm as a lectotype of this species. Bourdot and Galzin (1927) reported E. umbrinella from France. Neuhoff (1935) published records of E. umbrinella from Central Europe which seem to belong to this species, except for his records on Pinus in Germany most likely referring to Ulocolla saccharina (see below). Here we report E. umbrinella from the Caucasus.
