Exidia purpureocinerea MacOwan
Abstract
Exidia purpureocinerea MacOwan, Grevillea 10 (55): 106, 1882 Holotype. South Africa. Eastern Cape: Somerset East, Boschberg, [no collecting date], MacOwan (K (M), isotype – S F 20629, studied). The type material of E. purpureocinerea is nearly sterile and badly infected, and only two turgid basidiospores were found, measuring 8.2–9.7 × 3.4–3.8 μm. These spore measurements, combined with the rather light-colored basidiomata and the presence of obtuse, regularly arranged (3–4 per mm, up to 70 × 60 μm) projections indicate that E. purpureocinerea is a member of the E. japonica complex. Morphologically, it is very similar to or probably even conspecific with Tremellochaete atlantica R. L. M. Alvarenga. The latter species was originally described from Brazil (Phookamsak et al. 2019) and later reported from the southern part of China (Tohtirjap et al. 2023). However, we refrain from synonymizing these species awaiting sequenced material of E. purpureocinerea from South Africa. Exidia tanzanica is another Tremellochaete - like species from Africa (see description above). It differs from E. purpureocinerea in having darker basidiomata with more densely arranged hymenial projections, as well larger basidia and basidiospores.
