Exidia tenax Cooke

Abstract

Exidia tenax Cooke, Grevillea 8 (46): 57, 1879 Holotype. New Zealand. Southland: Winton, on branches, [no collecting date], Berggren 111 (K (M) 1435722, studied). After studying the type material of E. tenax, we concluded that it is yet another species in the Exidia japonica complex. The darker basidiomata and narrower basidiospores of E. tenax (measured as (10.1 –) 10.5–15.4 (– 16.3) × (3.4 –) 4.1–5.2 (– 5.4) μm (n = 23 / 1), L = 12.51, W = 4.59, Q = 2.74) preclude its conspecificity with Tremellochaete australiensis F. Wu et al. recently described from Australia (Tohtirjap et al. 2023). It is possible that E. novozealandica introduced from the same geographic area is a younger synonym of E. tenax. Alternatively, E. novozealandica may turn out to be an older name for T. australiensis. Solving these questions requires a thorough study of the E. japonica group in Oceania, as well as the type study of E. novozealandica.
