Sebacina candida L. S. Olive 1898

Abstract

Sebacina candida L. S. Olive, Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 85: 21, 1958 Holotype. Tahiti • Faa Tautia Valley, corticated dead limbs, 9 Aug 1956, Olive T 442 (NY 00738349, studied). After studying the type specimen of S. candida, we concluded that it is most likely a member of Proterochaete and it probably belongs in the vicinity of P. latispora, another representative of the genus with distinctly ellipsoid basidiospores. However, the basidiospores of S. candida are clearly smaller than in P. latispora, 6.8–9.3 × 5.1–6.0 μm (n = 8). The identity of S. candida should be re-established based on sequenced material from Polynesia. Wells (1961) combined S. candida in Exidiopsis and reintroduced it based on a wider set of specimens from the neotropics. However, the conspecificity of this material with S. candida s. typi is questionable. Furthermore, Wells (ibid.) mentioned Tremella sordida Speg. originally described from Tierra del Fuego as an older name for S. candida which eventually could not have been combined in Exidiopsis, due to the existence of Exidiopsis sordida (S. L. Olive) K. Wells (= Sebacina sordida S. L. Olive). The latter species was compared by Wells with the European E. grisea (= Ulocolla grisea in the present study). No modern, sequenced material is known to us for either T. sordida or S. sordida.
