Enabling EMT studies in German benchmark grid through automated data transfer

IET conference proceedings., vol. 2026, pp. 109–113

Abstract

Modern power systems increasingly rely on electromagnetic transient (EMT)-type simulations of larger power system sections for large-signal stability assessment and fault propagation investigations. However, a lack of adequate large-scale EMT-type grid models and established processes for data exchange between different simulation domains hinders adoption of such simulations. An automated process for grid model data transfer to an EMT-type simulation environment enables flexible import of large, modern grid models. For this, a custom data conversion script, standardized grid data file formats and existing import software are utilized. The process is demonstrated using a modern German benchmark grid model, which incorporates market-based power flow data, renewable energy sources and high voltage DC transmission. The EMT-type simulation of the processed grid model, using static component models, replicates these power flows with high accuracy. Future addition of dynamic component data transfer will enable investigations of dynamic interactions between components and fault propagations.
