DC-side stability assessment methods for multi-vendor VSC-based HVDC systems: a review and applicability analysis

IET conference proceedings., vol. 2026, pp. 183–191

Abstract

The shift towards multi-vendor VSC-HVDC systems necessitates interoperability among components from different manufacturers and a reliable method for DC-side stability assessment for multi-vendor HVDC systems. Conventional detailed assessment methods often require full model disclosure, which is not feasible in multi-vendor systems due to proprietary constraints. Conversely, black-box approaches, while maintaining the vendor’s intellectual property, cannot identify the root cause of instability, making them unsuitable for multi-vendor systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review and comparative analysis of DC-side stability assessment methods, including eigenvalue analysis, impedance-based methods, time-domain simulation, and analytical methods. It evaluates their application under varying levels of model openness (white-box, grey-box, and black-box). While recent advancements in impedance-based methods make them a promising tool for assessing the stability of multi-vendor HVDC systems, analytical and time-domain simulations remain the primary methods for in-depth root cause analysis and validation. The study also provides a comprehensive reference framework for researchers and system operators in selecting suitable DC-side stability assessment methods for HVDC systems.
