Experimental Data Set on Liquid Ammonia Flash-Boiling Atomization in Steel Micro-Nozzles: Boundary Conditions, Internal Geometry (µCT), and Spray Morphology
RWTH Publications (RWTH Aachen)
Abstract
The utilization of liquid ammonia as a carbon-free fuel presents a promising pathway for decarbonizing energy conversion systems. A critical factor in its successful implementation is the precise control of the injection and atomization processes, particularly under flash-boiling conditions. This dataset provides an experimental characterization of continuous steady state liquid ammonia flash-boiling atomization using stainless steel micro-nozzles with varying aspect ratios. High-speed shadowgraphy was employed to capture steady-state spray morphology, yielding high-resolution data on spray shape, cone angle, and spatial fluctuations. Additionally, the internal geometry of the utilized micro-nozzles was meticulously characterized using micro-computed tomography (µCT), providing complete 3D and cross-sectional models to analyze surface roughness, inlet geometry, and manufacturing deviations. The dataset integrates these insights with processed thermodynamic and fluid dynamic parameters, including injection pressure, temperature, mass flow rate, discharge coefficients (Cd), and Jakob numbers. By linking raw imaging data with evaluated spray metrics, this dataset supports the development of predictive models and injection strategies for ammonia-based combustion systems.
