NHMW 1863/0015/0616, SL: 2.0 mm, MD: 1.4 mm, Buituri (Romania), Figs 12D 1 –D 2. Revised description. Shell small, with globose last whorl, very broad (SL/MD: 1.4–1.5) with moderately high conical spire (AA= 58–64°). Protoconch paucispiral of about 1.5 whorls (dp = 400 μm). Junction with teleoconch marked by beginning of cancellate sculpture. Teleoconch of three whorls separated by narrowly impressed, linear suture. Spire whorls strongly convex with rounded shoulder. Sculpture of close-set axial ribs separated by interspaces of about same width, overrun by weaker spiral cords, resulting in cancellate pattern. Last whorl 72–75% of total height, with periphery just above mid-whorl (SL/ PH = 1.9), weakly convex to faintly concave subsutural ramp, rounded shoulder, inflated below; sculpture occasionally more prominent and wider spaced along shoulder; base broad conical, constricted. Aperture 58–61% of total height, moderately narrow, widening abapically (MD/MAW = 4.0–4.5). Outer lip thickened by convex labial varix, bearing low central palatal swelling; anal sinus broad, shallow, U-shaped; siphonal canal very short, open, broad, deeply notched at tip. Columella with two strongly elevated, robust folds abapically, parietal denticle prominent, trigonal. Columellar and parietal callus strongly thickened, sharply delimited, narrowly expanded over base. Discussion. Ringiculocosta costata is quite variable concerning its sculpture, which led Seguenza (1881) to introduce the varieties tenuis (finely cancellate) and sicula (coarsely cancellate). Paratethyan specimens display a comparable variability within the same locality and taxonomic separation of the various morphs is unjustified. The situation seems to be different in the Eastern Paratethys Sea from where Guzhov (2022a) described three subspecies of Ringiculocosta costata from the Tarkhanian and Chokrakian (Middle Miocene). These taxa seem to represent a distinct radiation in the largely isolated Eastern Paratethys Sea. Ringiculocosta plicatula (Mayer, 1871), from the Burdigalian (Early Miocene) of Saucats (France), differs in its slenderer shell, higher last whorl, weaker shoulder and predominant axial sculpture (see Mayer 1871: 347, pl. 9, fig. 8; Morlet 1878: 267, pl. 6, fig. 9). Similarly, Ringiculocosta cancellarioides (Seguenza, 1881) differs in its slenderer outline. Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic based on associated fauna (own data, M.H.). Distribution in Central Paratethys.
