Cylichna undefined-1

Abstract

Cylichna sp. 1 Figs 44B 1 –B 3 Illustrated material. NHMW-ZOO-MO-75000-E-3324, SL: 4.3 mm, MD: 2.3 mm, Bad Vöslau (Austria), Figs 44B 1 –B 3. Description. Small, thin shelled, subcylindrical, moderately broad shell with weakly convex sides and periphery placed below mid-whorl. Apex, moderately broad, slightly truncated, umbilicus reduced to shallow pit with a narrow notch at its base, apical plane shallowly concave. Shell surface glossy with delicate growth lines and faint spiral grooves in apical region. Outer lip extending above apex, thin, straight below. Aperture moderately narrow in adapical part, strongly widening anteriorly. Base not preserved. Columella short, weakly excavated with delicate, narrow rim; no columellar fold. Discussion. Only a single fragmentary specimen is available, which lacks the base. It differs from Cylichna dolium sp. nov. in its much wider aperture. Cylichna castexi (Peyrot, 1932), from the Aquitanian of France might be a related species and is comparable in size and shape but seems to differ in its more truncated apex and the fully sealed apical umbilicus (see Peyrot 1932: pl. 13, figs 18–20). Paleoenvironment. The occurrence in the Baden Formation at Bad Vöslau (Austria) suggests middle to outer neritic environments with up to 210 m water depth (Kranner et al. 2021). Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Bad Vöslau (Austria) (hoc opus).
