Philine catena (Montagu, 1803) — Landau et al. 2020: 275, pl. 21, figs 1, 2 (cum syn.). Philine catena (Montagu, 1803) — Landau et al. 2023: 399: pl. 48, figs 1–2. non Philine catena (Montagu, 1803) — Brunetti 2022: 80, fig. 189 [= Hermania scabra (Müller, 1784)] Type material. Syntype, illustrated in Montagu (1803: pl. 7, fig. 7), Bigberry bay at Devon (UK); not in Montagu collection at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) in Exeter (UK) nor in NHMUK in London (Oliver et al. 2017). Illustrated material. NHMW-ZOO-MO-75000-E-9340, SL: 2.7 mm, MD: 2.0 mm, Enzesfeld (Austria), illustrated in Berger (1953: pl. 18, fig. 82), Figs 54D 1 –D 3. Revised description. Shell small, relatively fragile, relatively broad subrectangular, with flattened spire (SL/ MD = 1.4). Last whorl strongly inflated, apex roundly truncated (MD/ApD = 2.9), whorl profile convex below, only weakly rounded to nearly straight at base. Periphery above mid-whorl (SL/ PH = 1.7). Sculpture of regular, chain-like spiral grooves (poorly preserved in Paratethyan material). Aperture total height of shell, wide in upper quarter (MD/AW = 4.0, greatly widening abapically (MD/MAW = 1.1), resulting in large expansion rate (ER = 3.6); outer lip thin. Columella much reduced, narrow. Discussion. See Landau et al. (2023: 399). Paleoenvironment. Extant Philine catena has a wide bathymetric range from low tide down to 2000 m water depth (Ohnheiser & Malaquias 2013: 280). Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Polish -Ukrainian Fore-Carpathian Basin: Wieliczka (Poland) (Reuss 1867); Vienna Basin: Bad Vöslau, Enzesfeld (Austria) (Berger 1853). Proto-Mediterranean Sea. Serravallian (Middle Miocene): Karaman Basin: Akpınar, Lale, Seyithasan (Turkey) (Landau et al. 2013). Northeastern Atlantic. Tortonian (Late Miocene): Loire Basin (France) (Landau et al. 2020). For Pliocene and Pleistocene occurrences in the North Sea, the northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea see Landau et al. (2023). Present-day. From Arctic waters and North Sea down to Madeira and Canary Islands (Nordsieck & García-Talavera 1979; Hernández et al. 2011; Landau et al. 2023) and Mediterranean Sea (Repetto et al. 2005; Gofas et al. 2011).
