Vellicolla postneglecta
Abstract
Vellicolla postneglecta (Berger, 1953) Figs 49A–C Retusa (Pyrunculus) postneglecta n. sp. — Berger 1949: 83 [nomen nudum]. * Retusa (Pyrunculus) postneglecta n. sp. — Berger 1953: 102, pl. 17, figs 49–51. R [etusa]. (P [yrunculus].) postneglecta Berg.— Sieber 1958: 163. Type material. Holotype, NHMW-ZOO-MO-75000-E-47055A, SL: 4.3 mm, MD: 2.1 mm, Lăpugiu (Romania), Figs 49A 1 –A 3. Paratypes, NHMW-ZOO-MO-75000-E-11797, SL: 4.2 mm, MD: 2.4 mm, Bad Vöslau (Austria), Figs 49B 1 –B 2; NHMW-ZOO-MO-75000-E-11797, SL: 4.2 mm, MD: 2.3 mm, Bad Vöslau (Austria), Figs 49C 1 –C 3. Revised description. Shell small, medium-thickness, ovate-pyriform, broad (SL/MD = 1.8–2.0), only last whorl visible. Last whorl strongly inflated; periphery placed just below mid-whorl (SL/ PH = 2.2–2.5), rounded at rapidly contracting base. Apex produced, truncated, moderately narrow (MD/ApD = 2.5–2.8), deeply and narrowly umbilicate, apical plane strongly oblique (AP = 27–33°), delimited by round-edged elevated crest. Sculpture of a few spiral grooves just below apex weakening abapically, and over base, strengthening abapically. Aperture longer than shell, slightly widening at apex, moderately narrow below, narrowing towards mid-section (MD/AW = 7.3– 7.9), distinctly widening anteriorly (MD/MAW = 2.3–2.7), resulting in moderate low rate of 2.9–3.2. Outer lip narrowly alate apically, extending some distance above apex, weakly concave below. Columella short, with narrow columellar callus, delimiting narrow, deep umbilicus. No columellar fold. Parietal callus not developed. Discussion. The sculpture of spiral grooves was overemphasized in the illustration of Berger (1953: pl. 17, fig. 49). For comparison with Vellicolla pannonica (Csepreghy-Meznerics, 1952), see above. Vellicolla postneglecta is reminiscent of the extant Pyrunculus pyriformis (Adams, 1850), from the Philippines, but differs in its less inflated last whorl and the wider umbilicus. Vellicolla okomotoi (Habe, 1952) is very similar but the latter has a higher placed periphery and the apical crest is more strongly constricted below. Pyrunculus cf. postneglectus of Stein et al. (2016: pl. 74, figs 4–5), from the early Miocene of the North Sea differs in its much broader apex and its outer lip is less raised above the apex. Paleoenvironment. The occurrence in the Baden Formation at Bad Vöslau (Austria) suggests middle to outer neritic environments with up to 210 m water depth (Kranner et al. 2021). Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Bad Vöslau (Austria) (Berger 1953); Făget Basin: Lăpugiu de Sus (Romania) (Berger 1953).
