Ringicula dentata Berger 1954
Abstract
Ringicula dentata Berger, 1954 Figs 13E, 15F 1 –F 2 * Ringicula (Ringiculella) auriculata dentata n. subsp. — Berger 1954: 124, pl. 10, figs 51–52. R [ingicula]. (R [ingiculina].) auriculata dentata Berg.— Sieber 1958: 163.1 Type material. Holotype, NHMW-ZOO-MO-75000-E-57968, SL. 7.3 mm, MD: 4.8 mm, Bad Vöslau (Austria), illustrated in Berger (1954: pl. 10, fig. 51), Fig 13E, 15F 1 –F 2 2. Revised description. Shell medium sized, globose, broad (SL/MD = 1.5), with high conical spire (AA= 53°). Protoconch low conical, paucispiral, of about 1.5 whorls (dp = 350 μm). Teleoconch of four whorls separated by narrowly impressed, linear suture. Spire whorls relatively high, weakly convex. Distinct spiral cords on first two teleoconch whorls, rapidly weakening abapically. Last whorl 71% of total height, globose. Periphery placed mid-whorl (SL/ PH = 2.0); not constricted at base, glossy, with several blurred, convex, narrow spiral cords separated by smooth, wide interspaces over base. Several narrow spiral cords over base. Aperture 74% of total height, adapically moderately narrow, widening abapically (MD/MAW = 3.6). Outer lip very strongly thickened by wide labial varix with broad, poorly delimited palatal swelling bearing stout denticles at inner edge. Anal sinus broad, moderately deep, U-shaped; siphonal canal very short, open, broad, notched at tip. Columella with two strongly elevated, relatively thin folds abapically, parietal denticle prominent, fused with broad, thickened parietal pad, overhanging and narrowing aperture adapically. Columellar and parietal callus thickened, sharply delimited, broadly expanded and thickened over medial half of venter. Color pattern of thin dark stripes, coinciding with spiral cords on last whorl. Discussion. This rare species is reminiscent of Ringicula hoernesii (Seguenza, 1881), with which it co-occurs. Especially apertural features and sculpture are almost identical. However, Ringicula dentata Berger, 1954 differs in its considerably higher conical spire and the denticles within the outer lip. Similarly, Ringicula guzhovi Landau, Harzhauser & Malaquias, 2023 differs mainly by its smooth outer lip and marked palatal swelling but without denticles. Berger (1954) mentioned several specimens, but we could only trace the holotype. We tentatively follow Berger (1954) and separate this shell from its congeners based on the peculiar dentition on the outer lip and color pattern, not seen in its Paratethyan congeners. Paleoenvironment. The occurrence in the Baden Formation at Bad Vöslau (Austria) suggests middle to outer neritic environments with up to 210 m water depth (Kranner et al. 2021). Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Bad Vöslau (Austria) (Berger 1954).
