Pseudavena Sacco 1897
Abstract
Genus Pseudavena Sacco, 1897 Type species. Tornatina (Pseudavena) tauroglandula Sacco, 1897; original designation by Sacco (1897: 39). Early or Middle Miocene, Italy. Discussion. Pseudavena was established by Sacco (1897) as subgenus of Tornatina A. Adams, 1850 [= Acteocina J. E. Gray, 1847]. His diagnosis was very brief: “ It includes forms similar to Tornatina, but with the spire hidden by the last whorl of the spire, with a transversely striated surface and longitudinally plicate in the upper part.” (Sacco 1897: 39, translated from Italian). Pseudavena is characterized by slender to moderately broad subcylindrical shells with dome-shaped apex in which the first teleoconch whorl is covered partly by the subsequent whorl and by a peculiar spiral sculpture, which is most prominent along the shoulder and on the base. Utriculus spatha Watson, 1883, from the Caribbean Sea, might be a living representative of this genus (see Pilsbry 1895: 218, pl. 25, figs 53–55). Some extant species placed in Cylichnium Dall, 1908, type species Utriculus domitus Dall, 1889; present-day, Caribbean Sea, are reminiscent of Pseudavena. Cylichnium ancillarioides (Schepman, 1913), from Fiji, and Cylichnium nanum Valdés, 2008, from Vanatu, are comparable in outline and especially Cylichnium nanum is reminiscent of Pseudavena due to its spiral sculpture along the shoulder and the prominent columellar fold. In Cylichnium species, the last whorl covers the spire completely (see Valdés 2008: figs 55A–E, G–H).
