Vellicolla pannonica

Abstract

Vellicolla pannonica (Csepreghy-Meznerics, 1952) Figs 49D–E * Sabatia (Mnestia) pannonica n. sp. — Csepreghy-Meznerics 1952: 229, pl. 14, figs 15–17. Retusa (Pyrunculus) austriaca n. sp. — Berger 1949: 83 [nomen nudum]. Retusa (Pyrunculus) austriaca n. sp. — Berger 1953: 102, pl. 17, fig. 48. R [etusa]. (P [yrunculus].) austriaca Berg.— Sieber 1958: 163. Mnestia pannonica Csepreghy-Meznerics, 1952 — Strausz 1966: pl. 75, figs 3–4. Sabatia (Mnestia) pannonica Csepreghy-Meznerics, 1952 — Pálfy et al. 2008: 109. Type material. Holotype, M.61.4301, SL: 3.0 mm, MD: 1.7 mm, Szob (Hungary), illustrated in Csepreghy-Meznerics (1952: pl. 14, figs 15–17). Picture made by Péter Kóbor, HUN-REN Centre for Agricultural Research, Plant Protection Institute in Martonvásár; Figs 49D 1 –D 2. Illustrated material. NHMW-ZOO-MO-75000-E-3330, SL: 3.5 mm, MD: 2.1 mm, Bad Vöslau (Austria), holotype of Retusa (Pyrunculus) austriaca Berger 1953, illustrated in Berger (1953: pl. 17, fig. 48), Figs 49E 1 –E 3. Revised description. Shell small, medium-thickness, ovate to ovate-pyriform, broad (SL/MD = 1.7), only last whorl visible. Last whorl strongly inflated; periphery strongly convex, just below mid-whorl (SL/ PH = 2.2), rounded at rapidly contracting base. Apex produced, narrowly truncated, moderately narrow (MD/ApD = 2.3), deeply and narrowly umbilicate, strongly oblique (AP = 27°), delimited by round-edged elevated crest, distinctly concave below. Sculpture of a few spiral grooves just below apex weakening abapically, and over base, strengthening abapically. Aperture longer than shell, slightly widening at apex, moderately narrow below, narrowing towards mid-section (MD/AW = 4.6), distinctly widening anteriorly (MD/MAW = 2.5), resulting in low expansion rate (ER = 1.8). Outer lip narrowly alate apically, extending far above apex, weakly concave below. Columella moderately short, nearly straight with narrow, erect, columellar callus, delimiting broad, deep umbilicus. No columellar fold. Parietal callus not developed. Paratethyan synonyms. Retusa (Pyrunculus) austriaca Berger, 1953, from the Badenian of Bad Vöslau (Austria) is junior synonym of Vellicolla pannonica. Discussion. Vellicolla pannonica (Csepreghy-Meznerics, 1952) is reminiscent of Vellicolla postneglecta (Berger, 1953) with which it co-occurs, but is smaller, more inflated, with wider aperture and deeper concavity below the apical crest. Its apex is wider and differences in apertural features are well expressed in the smaller expansion rate of Vellicolla pannonica (1.8 versus 2.9–3.2). The extant Indo-West Pacific Vellicolla muscaria (Gould, 1859) differs mainly in the higher position of the periphery and the rapidly contracting base. Paleoenvironment. The occurrence at Szob (Hungary) suggests shallow marine environments (Dulai 1996). Occurrences in the Baden Formation at Bad Vöslau (Austria) suggests middle to outer neritic environments with up to 210 m water depth (Kranner et al. 2021). Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Bad Vöslau (Austria) (Berger 1953); Pannonian Basin: Szob (Hungary) (Strausz 1966).
