See Landau et al. (2023: 387). Discussion. As discussed by Landau et al. (2013: 340), Volvulella acuminata (Bruguière, 1792) is either a species complex or an unusually long-lived and widely distributed species. We note that Paratethyan specimens at hand have the periphery above mid-whorl (SL/ PH = 1.7) with slightly contracting sides below the periphery, whereas typical shells of V. acuminata tend to be roughly subcylindrical (e.g., Chirli 2013: pl. 12, figs 18–23; Landau et al. 2023: pl. 36, figs 1–3). The Paratethyan morph is reminiscent of the extant Volvulella fortis (Thiele, 1925) from New Caledonia (See Valdés 2008: fig. 81C). Specimens described by Csepreghy-Meznerics (1952) from Szob (Hungary) correspond to the subcylindrical morph typical for V. acuminata. Tentatively, we treat slender and stout morphs as conspecific. Paleoenvironment. Volvulella acuminata is found circalittoral muddy sands (Gofas et al. 2011). Paratethyan occurrences derive from inner neritic and middle neritic settings. Many extant Volvulella species are documented from deep water habitats (Valdés 2008). Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Bad Vöslau (Austria) (Berger 1953); Pannonian Basin: Szob (Hungary) (Strausz 1966). Făget Basin: Coşteiu de Sus, Lăpugiu de Sus (Romania) (Boettger 1907; hoc opus). Distribution. The status of the various Early Miocene to Pleistocene records in the Mediterranean region, the north-eastern Atlantic and North Sea might need revision. For details on the distribution see Landau et al. (2013, 2020, 2023). Volvulella acuminata occurs in the Atlantic from Norway (Thompson 1988) to Angola (Nicklès 1950) and in the entire Mediterranean Sea (Cossignani & Ardovini, 2011; Gofas et al. 2011).
