Spatial immune profiling characterizes tumor microenvironment heterogeneity between metastatic and nonmetastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in organ transplant patients
Journal of Investigative Dermatology, vol. 146, pp. 2924–2928.e10
Abstract
Solid organ transplant recipients (sOTRs) face an up to 100-fold increased risk of developing cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) compared to immunocompetent individuals (de Jong et al., 2024). These cancers not only occur more frequently in sOTRs, but also tend to present more aggressively, with increased risk of recurrence, perineural invasion, and metastasis (Genders et al., 2019). Although classic histopathological risk factors apply to both groups, the mechanisms underlying the elevated metastatic risk in sOTRs remain poorly understood.
