Ringiculocosta Sacco 1892

Abstract

Genus Ringiculocosta Sacco, 1892 Type species. Marginella costata Eichwald, 1830; by monotypy. Middle Miocene, Ukraine. Discussion. Ringiculocosta Sacco, 1892 is currently listed as subjective junior synonym of Ringicula Deshayes, 1838 by MolluscaBase eds (2025b). Ringiculocosta costata (Eichwald, 1830), Ringiculocosta plicatula (Mayer, 1871), from the Burdigalian (Early Miocene) of France, and Ringiculocosta cancellarioides (Seguenza, 1881), from the Middle and Late Miocene of the Central Paratethys Sea and the Proto-Mediterranean Sea, differ distinctly from Ringicula in their peculiar, cancellate sculpture. Therefore, we prefer to keep these species separated at genus level. The genus appeared during the Early Miocene in the northeastern Atlantic and persisted to the Pliocene of the Mediterranean Sea (Ringiculocosta costata astensis Sacco, 1892). Ringiculocosta occurred also in the Eastern Paratethys Sea during the Tarkhanian and Chokrakian (Middle Miocene) (Guzhov 2022a). During the Early Miocene it reached also the North Sea where it was represented by two species (Ringiculocosta costata (Eichwald, 1830) and Ringiculocosta costata sensu Moths et al. 2010).
