VILLASnode API Gateway demonstrated for FMU and OpenDSS Co-Simulation of IEEE13bus System
Open Source Modelling and Simulation of Energy Systems (OSMSES), pp. 1–6
Abstract
An Application Programming Interface (API) gateway has several functionalities. We concentrate on the translation of one API type to another. This paper provides an implementation of an API gateway in the open-source coupling tool VILLASnode to connect simulation tools. The gateway supports the translation of the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) methods implemented as Representational State Transfer (REST) API into Google Remote Procedure Call (gRPC). An FMU-OpenDSS co-simulation of the IEE13bus system demonstrates the functionality of the gateway. To provide alternatives to the API gateway co-simulation, FMU and OpenDSS node-types are implemented in VILLASnode as well. A comparison with the classical socket-based data exchange for distributed co-simulation and a local co-simulation is conducted. We quantified the delay contributions to show the impacts on additional delay and integration efficiency. Although the gateway introduces more overhead, it allows for more flexible integration of simulation tools, hence improving the automation and interoperability of the co-simulation process.
