Expanding and Extending AMUSE

Institute of Physics eBooks, pp. 10–1

Abstract

Congratulations on reaching the final chapter of this book! In the last several chapters, we have demonstrated how AMUSE can be used to run individual codes and, more importantly, how to couple codes to simulate more complex systems. In this final chapter, we present several examples of advanced strategies for coupling multiple codes trading performance for accuracy, and vice versa. In addition, we explore two tightly coupled physical problems in more depth. In the first example, we explore accretion onto a supermassive black hole from a population of massive stars in orbit around it. In the second, we study the effect of a nearby supernova on a young planetary system with a circumstellar disk. The problems in this chapter require considerable computer resources for high-resolution results, but the examples can be run at lower but acceptable resolution with some patience on a good workstation.
