Taxonomic remarks. The variety of color forms (and general variability) of C. vittata has been commented on before (for example see Dow & Singa (2022) on forms found in Sarawak and Brunei) but no detailed study of C. vittata and its closest allies has been made since that of Lieftinck (1940a). Two color forms were found at the Kampar Peninsula: (a) a largely dark form with yellow legs and a very variable (sometimes very reduced) pattern of pale markings on the synthorax, this form is very common in the low pH habitats of the main part of the peninsula; (b) the ‘typical’ red-legged form, only a single individual of this form was collected, at a small stream in oil palm on mineral soils at the base of the peninsula. In Borneo typically a single form is found in a given area, for instance a yellow-legged form is found in the southwest of Sarawak (where it occurs in a variety of habitats including PSF), with an exception in Brunei and Limbang Division in northeast Sarawak where the ‘typical’ red-legged form and a black form (Orr 2003, Dow & Singa 2022) both occur, but without clear partitioning by habitat. The situation in the Kampar Peninsula contrasts with that in Borneo with the two forms occurring in the Kampar Peninsula seemingly occupying different habitats. The yellow-legged form (which might be smaller, at least on average, than the ‘typical’ form but detailed measurements are needed to confirm this) present in the peninsula might be a low pH phenotype but the possibility that it is a distinct taxon cannot be excluded and further work is needed on this entire complex.
