MoDALIA: An Ontology for Teaching and Learning Materials for Research Data Management
Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)
Abstract
Abstract There is an increasing number of platforms that use knowledge graphs as backend. This allows more efficient linking with other sources of information and making inferences on top of existing data. Ontologies are the backbone of such knowledge graphs. It is highly desired to have a platform for learning material on Research Data Management (RDM) that covers different levels, audience groups and disciplines. Here we present MoDALIA, an OWL ontology, as the backbone of a teaching, learning and personal recommendation platform (DALIA) that answers relevant questions that allow finding suitable learning resources for a given learning objective. The included information covers, among other things, the type of the resource (both its media type, e.g. video, text or code, as well as a classification of the resource, e.g. as tutorial, case study, lecture or book), the topics covered in the resource as well as its target group and requirements concerning the learners’ current level of competency. MoDALIA is compatible with schema.org (schema.org project 2024) and AMB (Pohl et al. (2024)). We used a modular approach to the design of our ontology. Moreover MoDALIA is FAIR. It has a persistent URL, it has a license defined, it links to existing vocabularies in Linked Open Data (LOD), and it is published in a public Git repository and is findable via search engines. MoDALIA also has a standard documentation. The link to our ontology is https://purl.org/ontology/modalia.
