Abstract

Abstract The healthcare sector has reached a crucial point where governments and healthcare providers recognize the need to transform traditional processes. This transformation aims to relieve all participants in the complex ecosystem, achieve personalized, high-quality patient-centered care, and reduce inefficiency and costs. A call for innovative approaches involving all stakeholders has emerged, with open innovation being a potential solution. Open innovation can overcome the limitations of closed approaches by leveraging diversity, knowledge-sharing, and cooperation to source ideas and solutions from multiple sources. This chapter outlines the concept of open innovation and its role in healthcare. It explains open innovation at three perspective levels—marco, meso, and micro—highlighting a toolbox with examples that can be used across the innovation process (ideation, development, and commercialization). Best practice use cases highlight how healthcare organizations have effectively utilized open innovation. Key takeaways and challenges related to implementing open innovation in healthcare are also discussed.
