A POL for Modular Plants using Capabilities in Master Recipes
IFAC-PapersOnLine, vol. 59, pp. 89–94
Abstract
Modular automation offers solutions for increased flexibility in the process industry by utilizing Module Type Package (MTP). This contribution presents an open-source Process Orchestration Layer (POL) for flexible production, which enables execution of standardized process descriptions in process industry using the Capability, Skill and Service model. A unique feature of the POL is its ability to execute master recipes defined in BatchML that are compliant with ISA-88. These recipes include offered capabilities provided by Process Equipment Assemblies (PEAs) with skills according to implemented MTP services and procedures. Each PEA provides distinct capabilities, e.g., heating or mixing. The POL, labeled Recipol, parses the recipe and MTP files, coordinates the available PEAs, and executes distributed process operations while monitoring their states. The POL was tested and validated on a modular testbed comprising four heterogeneous and vendor-independent PEAs connected via OPC UA. This work demonstrates the potential of MTP-based architectures and provides a validated foundation for future research on interoperable modular automation systems utilizing standardized process descriptions.
