Dilemmas in Open Publication Practices: Conversation starter kit

Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Abstract

This Conversation starter kit contains nine dilemma personas, and a slide of exercise instructions. This was used at the Open Science Festival 2025 Barcamp session (24 October 2025 - Groningen). The dilemma personas are brief hypothetical (though practice-based) descriptions of researchers who experience an issue in pursuing open scholarly communication practices. They have to balance open science values, career strategies, and practicalities like policies and cost-models, in a reflections of value tensions that exist throughout academia. The dilemmas should be used in an exercise of perspective-taking and value-articulation: what does the persona find important, why is that, and how does their view align with other stakeholders' views? This set of dilemmas is being developed at Leiden University Libraries - Centre for Digital Scholarship, to help initiate and deepen conversations on strategies and issues with scholarly communication at large. It is used in particular in the implementation of Leiden University's Strategic Publication Framework.
