An introduction to interoperability in the research context

Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Abstract

This publication provides an accessible introduction (starter kit) to interoperability in research, developed collaboratively by a network of interoperability community managers and specialists across Dutch institutions. It outlines why interoperability is essential for effective, cross-disciplinary research collaboration and how it enables the seamless exchange, interpretation, and reuse of data and software. The document explains key concepts such as technical, syntactic, semantic, organizational, and legal interoperability, and clarifies their roles in ensuring that research systems and datasets can work together meaningfully. It also highlights common barriers and misunderstandings, offering practical strategies for fostering collaboration and embedding interoperability early in research workflows. Finally, it distinguishes between interoperability and reusability within the FAIR framework, emphasizing their complementary roles in advancing Open Science and sustainable data practices.
