Transmitter Education Based on the Mixerless Architecture

European Microwave Conference (EuMC), pp. 167–170

Abstract

We propose the analysis of the mixerless transmitter (Tx) concept as a segue into the understanding of general Txs in RF systems engineering classes. The mixerless Tx concept is purely linear, does not require understanding of mixers, and thereby offers a low threshold insight into the working principle of Txs generating complex RF signals. It is well suited for education regarding complex modulation schemes and power and spectral efficiency of Tx architectures. To this end, we developed an application for the theoretical analysis of mixerless Txs which is publicly available. The power and spectral efficiency of various configurations can be calculated and graphically illustrated. Students can engage with these and learn about Tx design challenges and trade-offs.
