Abstract

Adapting language use appropriately to different situations and communicative settings is a key requirement that apprentices have to meet in workplace-based vocational training. A well-developed register competence is therefore crucial for successful vocational education. The relevance of register competence in workplace contexts highlights the need to conceptualize it as a practice- and training-relevant domain of competence. This should be systematically developed in vocational school instruction and supported through practice-oriented methods - such as digitally supported approaches. On this basis, the first part of this chapter examines the linguistic and communicative demands of vocational training and explores the concepts of register awareness and register competence in more detail. The second part discusses the general applicability of digital media in the context of vocationally oriented language education. Finally, drawing on the research project DigitalWorkStory (DWS), the chapter presents a specific digitally based methodology for fostering register competence in vocational and training-related settings.
