Conceptualisation of semi-precast elements for bridge construction using semi-embedded composite dowels

Report, vol. 25, pp. 1601–1608

Abstract

With the growing need for bridge renovations and replacements, fast and cost-effective solutions are essential. In recent years, composite construction has become increasingly common for short- and medium-span bridges over roads and railways, while prefabricated construction elements play a crucial role regarding flexibility and reduced construction times. In prefabricated composite bridges, the composite joint is typically secured with headed studs. As an innovative approach composite dowels are used, to enable material savings while exhibiting favourable fatigue behaviour. The dowels secure both the prefabricated concrete slab and the in-situ concrete layer. In this study, composite dowels in prefabricated bridge elements are investigated through push-out tests, assessing load-bearing behaviour in the semi-embedded constructive stage. Theoretical considerations were also made in order to optimise the test setup for future investigations.
