Real-time Testing of a Battery Energy Storage System Scheduling Algorithm in Decarbonized MV Networks through Software-In-the-Loop Simulation

Abstract

As the prevalence of renewable energy systems on power networks increases, battery energy storage systems have become an important asset for enhancing the network performance. Multiple services are generally sought to fully exploit their capability and justify their economic benefits. Following the initial design, scheduling strategies that are based on short-term forecasts play an important role in maintaining operational efficiency. However, the error in the local level forecasting may be more pronounced. The paper proposes a dual component scheduling algorithm to mitigate the effect of the forecast error on the bus voltage profiles. Simulation studies show that incorporating a local control element effectively improves the profiles, even at buses distant from the battery locations. The operation methodology is tested through a software-in-the-loop real-time simulation coupling MATLAB platform with the RTDS.
